Every year since the start of Comp Sci High basketball has been increasingly better. The record gets better. The coaching gets better. The chemistry gets better. We become a closer and stronger family.
The 2023-2024 season has been the most impactful year in Comp Sci High history so far. It's the 6th year of Comp Sci High and we have repeatedly made the playoffs every year.
Throughout a season highlighted by success and resiliency, our team is an example of basketball success. Our boys' and girls' varsity basketball teams both secured spots in the playoffs. The #2 seeds in the CSAA League, earning them one of the highest chances to take home the championship .
The Boys' Varsity Team's impressive 12-1 record is an example of their consistent dedication, hard work, and extreme competitiveness. This amazing record not only strengthens their status as an intimidating team, but also increases the excitement around their playoff run.Simultaneously, the Girls' Varsity Team, as well, reached the #2 seed in the league. Similar to the boys, this shows their level of competitiveness towards the game.
As the playoffs begin, the combined legacy of our Girls and Boys Varsity Basketball Teams starts to take action, becoming the main source of community of the entire school community. The #2 seed status for both teams and the boys 12-1 record, shows not only the journey to victory but the celebration of teamwork, resilience, and hard work that defines our school's athletic legacy. This playoff season, we have both teams in the top 2 of the league.
Boys Varsity Basketball Team:
During the 1st Round of the Playoffs, the Comp Sci High boys basketball season came to an end. The sacrifice all the players have made to get to this point, comes to an end. Having the best record ever in school history and 2nd best in the league. Going back to the 2022-2023 basketball season, clinching a spot in the playoffs. Coming in as #7 seed in the league and losing four impactful seniors in the class of 2023 — Justin Carnigie, Ramsey Lewis, Ryan Fuentes, and George Barillas.
The class of 2024 knew it was their time to shine. This is the largest senior basketball team yet. Looking at our 8 seniors on the team, I know that they have made such a positive impact on the team: Avery Ramos, Alex Narvaez, Tyshawn Thomas, “Mahamadou Sylla, Arnel Nsowah-Asante, Lyric Mateo, Jamil Campore, Gabriel Cepeda. This team is the last of the first four founding classes of Comp Sci High.
There are 3 seniors that have been playing for Comp Sci High’s Varsity team for their entire high school career; the seniors are Avery, Alex, and Tyshawn. These three have been through thick and thin throughout their years of high school basketball. From 2020-2021 playing on 125th street in the outdoor Charter League during Covid, to the 2023-2024 season, where they impacted the team to a 12 and 1 record. They have come a long way.
Coming from Comp Sci High junior varsity in 10th grade, Mahamadou, Lyric, and Jamil were all selected to play at the varsity level during 10th grade. Arnel not able to compete during the 2021-2022 season, but he was given the opportunity to be the manager. Later, through consistency and dedication, he finally got his spot on the varsity team in the 2022-2023 season. Lastly, for Gabriel, his entire goal in high school was to join the basketball team. Through determination and never giving up, he finally received the spot he’s been waiting for in his last high school year.
Girls Varsity Basketball Team:
During the 1st Round Playoffs, Comp Sci High beat Tapco. And, in the 2nd Round of playoffs, the Comp Sci High girls basketball season came to an end. They have persistently given every game this year their all. Having only 6 players in some games, and still pushing through is impressive. This shows the dedication that these girls have brung to the table. Also, being #2 seed in the league has shown the growth of Comp Sci High teams.
The seniors Humu and Laila have impacted the team so much. Humu joined the team in the 2022-2023 season and decided to keep playing until her senior year. She instantly made an impact on the team with her determination. The last one left from the first four founding class of the girls basketball team is Laila. This strong, dedicated, and consistent player has been playing since her freshman year. She continued in believing in herself and getting better everyday to make a greater impact on the team. Year after year, she’s been through the beginning to the end of her time at Comp Sci High.
Both teams, girls and boys, have shown so much improvement. This class of seniors and team playing 2023-2024 will be unforgettable. This is the last season before the change to the new Comp Sci High building. The class of 2024 was set to leave a legacy behind towards the underclassmen. This is the end of the chapter, but the book continues.
