Why the Slander? On the Comp Sci High Uniform Policy

“This sense of pride extends beyond the students; many also find joy in seeing their school logo around their community, when it's not on a sweater, or a polo shirt. It serves as a reminder of the school's accomplishments, and how the key values the school has instilled in students takes them farther than the classroom.”

With Comp Sci High’s relocation from 1300 Boynton Ave to 447 Wales Ave alongside an entirely new building, several changes in policy standards have followed regarding uniforms. Amongst these changes, the uniform policy has gotten what most would consider more disciplined and strict than last year. In the past, students were able to wear their exclusive 10th grade Comp Sci sweatsuits on any day of the week, along with any closed-toe shoe.

However, the policy has changed in a way that many dislike. For everyone except seniors, khaki pants are mandatory. Some closed-toe shoes such as Foam Runners and Crocs are no longer allowed, which upsets many, as this removes a sense of comfort from most. Yariel Beato added: “I’m neutral. I don’t have a problem with the green or gray, but my only problem is about those who bought black sweaters, as you can only wear them on Fridays, which defeats the purpose. I also don’t like the change about Foam Runners, but I guess they aren’t technically open toe shoes.” Yariel is right; it’s complicated.

On the other hand, some make the connection between their pride in Comp Sci High, and how the reinforcement may cause an increase in student pride. After short talks with students, some say they took pride in the uniform they wear, largely due to the school's reputation.

Francisco emphasized: “We should embrace being the kids known for the green uniform, and we should continue the practice.”

This sense of pride extends beyond the students; many also find joy in seeing their school logo around their community, when it's not on a sweater, or a polo shirt. It serves as a reminder of the school's accomplishments, and how the key values the school has instilled in students takes them farther than the classroom. Representing your school logo establishes a connection with alumni and current students, as students would now be allowed to look up, and see how the values that may sound like a broken record really do pay off.

Ultimately, while it is every student’s dream to come to school in whatever they please, it is important that we understand the long term importance of representing Comp Sci High, especially considering we are in a new neighborhood. It is more significant now than ever to display the warm-hearted intelligent student body of CSH, while we are leaving footprints in a neighborhood that most of us are unfamiliar with.

What do you think? Should we come to school in streetwear, or fully embrace our school spirit by wearing clothes that represent our second home?
