NYC’s Hidden Food Gems

Aren’t you tired of having the same foods over and over again? Don’t you want to try something new? I personally love trying new places, and so here are some of my favorite hidden gems in NYC.

Aren’t you tired of having the same foods over and over again? Don’t you want to try something new? I personally love trying new places, and so here are some of my favorite hidden gems in NYC.

I also asked around our community for their favorite food places and tried out some of their recommendations. Here are my thoughts.

Arthur Ave

My first stop was in Arthur Ave. I went to Morrone Pastry Shop located on 2349 Arthur Ave, Bronx, NY 10458. This is an Italian bakery that was established in 2005 and focuses on traditional pastries. I got a Linzer Tart, Marble Cookie, sugar cookie and cappuccino. I can honestly say that these pastries are some of the best I’ve had and for affordable prices. It is worth a visit if you are craving freshly baked goods.

While you’re in the area, head on across the street to the Arthur Ave Retail Market for some of the fluffiest zeppoles and the best tiramisu for a great price. Dua Delight is located towards the back left side of the market. Specializing in sweets, they have a wide variety of cookies, zeppoles, hot cocoa and much more! They are a relatively new shop compared to all the other merchants in the market. Dua Delight is approaching their two year anniversary in three days! I got six Zeppoles for $5 and a piece of tiramisu for $5. The zeppoles are made fresh to order and are the softest, fluffiest treat ever! The tiramisu was amazing for only $5. Definitely a 10/10 place for a sweet treat.

Fordham

Next, I headed over to Fordham to 188 Bakery Cuchifritos, located on 158 E 188th St, Bronx, NY 10468. Opened since 1982, they have mastered their craft. I cannot express how good this food was. I went at a relatively busy time and even then, I was attended to quickly and with good customer service. I got the classic 5 Arroz y Habichuelas with chicken, chicken and cheese pastelillos, and a lemonade for $17. They serve you generous amounts of food and I can confidently say you will definitely enjoy this place if you go.

Morris Park

Then, I went over to Morris Park where I tried Eastern European food for the first time at Nana’s Kitchen, located on 1809 Hone Ave, Bronx, NY 10461. They had great customer service and even recommended some dishes to try. I got stuffed peppers with ground beef, Byrek, and Qebpa for $33. The Qebpa was my favorite, it was like a sausage but filled with so much flavor, and the Byrek was like a pie but filled with ground beef and the soft pie-like texture made it all the more enjoyable.

Parkchester

Next up on my list I tried out a new place that has been open for only around 3 months: A Daughter And Two Sons located at 1807 Archer St, Bronx, NY 10460. This restaurant specializes in soul food and welcomes you with the kindest customer service. I tried their baked mac & cheese, fried chicken, cornbread and candied yams. Everything was so delicious and definitely satisfied my hunger. Since a lot of us are from around this area you should definitely come support this brand new small business!

St Anns

I visited Jalisco Tacos, which has been open since 1978, located at 214 St Ann's Ave, Bronx, NY 10454. I grew up visiting this place and I can assure you will get some great tacos for an affordable price. I got the Burrito de Bistec (steak) and it was $7.50. Their tacos are savory and this place is definitely underrated for their prices and quality food.

Chinatown

Now, if you are in the downtown area, try out one of my favorite places: Fried Dumplings in ChinaTown located on 106 Mosco St, New York, NY 10013. This is a small shop that sells 13 fried dumplings for ONLY $5. You can’t beat this price for such tasteful dumplings! These are personally some of the best dumplings I’ve had and for such a cheap price.

Right up the block is another one of my absolute favorite places to eat at: Ajisen Ramen, located on 14 Mott St, New York, NY 10013. This place is one I visit at least once a month. They serve my absolute favorite Spicy Pork Fried Rice and the best ramen! You can expect your meal here to be around $20+ although they do have cheaper food options just expect a smaller portion. They have another location on 28th st near KoreaTown. A wide variety of food options and customizable ramen. A must try if you are in ChinaTown.
